Edward P. Mangano was elected to the position of Nassau County Executive in November 2009. He had served five terms as Nassau County Legislator for the 17th Legislative District. A graduate of Hofstra University and Hofstra School of Law, Ed was admitted into the New York State Bar in 1988. During his tenure as a Nassau County Legislator, Ed worked hard to foster the revitalization of the former Grumman Property, where he was instrumental in restoring more than 15,000 jobs to the site. Ed established a Senior Citizen and Community Center in the 17th Legislative District in order to increase residents’ access to important Nassau County services. He assisted in creating a high technology small business incubator. Ed established a youth program to provide a place for teenagers to gather and played a key role in restoring Cantiague Park’s pools and age-oriented playground area. Ed has been a leader in preserving land to protect our environment and provide open space for future generations. In fact, Ed has been recognized by the New York League of Conservation Voters for "Working to preserve open space and setting aside $5 million for the acquisition of the (81 acre) Underhill Property," and for "Fighting for Clean Water/Clean Air bond act funding for the purpose of ground water protection." Ed has sponsored legislation resulting in the preservation of the historic 18th Century Jackson/Malcolm estate and enlarged the Jericho Preserve to 14 acres. Ed has been recognized extensively for his advocacy, receiving the Humanitarian of the Year Award from Family Residence and Essential Enterprises (FREE). He was inducted into the Long Island Business News’ 40 Rising Stars Under 40 Class of 2001. Ed has been named Legislator of the Year by the Vietnam Veterans Association, Chapter #82. He received the Nassau Council Small Business Person of the Year Award and Hofstra University Alumni Organization’s Estabrook Award. Ed was honored at the Children's House Tee-off for Kids, and has received the Citizenship Award from the Knights of Columbus Hartigan Council. He has also received the Hicksville Youth Council Award and Community Leadership Award from Boy Scouts Troop 604. Ed has been active in many charitable and fraternal organizations. He has served on the Board of Directors of Children's House, as an Honorary Trustee for Family and Children's Services, as Past President of the Bethpage/Plainview Rotary Club, as a board member of the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Northrop/Grumman Property Development Task Force, the Grumman Master Planning council, and the United States Navy Environmental Restoration Advisory Board. Ed also served on the Steering Committee of the Long Island Software Technology incubator at Briarcliffe College. He is proud of his work on the Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Advisory Committee, on the Leadership Council and the Long Island Mentoring Partnership.
